Meaning of Black Belt
Black is the opposite of white, therefore signifying the maturity and proficiency in TaeKwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.
Comprehensive TaeKwon-Do Knowledge
As a 1st Dan Black Belt, students must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of TaeKwon-Do including:
- All patterns from Chon-Ji through Choong-Moo
- All fundamental techniques and their applications
- Advanced breaking techniques
- Free sparring and step sparring
- Self-defense (Ho Sin Sul)
- TaeKwon-Do philosophy and history
- Teaching ability for lower ranks
Student Oath

Black Belt Responsibilities

Advanced Korean Terminology
Black belts should have comprehensive knowledge of Korean terminology used in TaeKwon-Do, including advanced techniques, philosophical concepts, and instructional commands.
Philosophy and Ethics
1st Dan Black Belts must demonstrate deep understanding of TaeKwon-Do philosophy, the application of the five tenets in daily life, and the responsibility that comes with achieving black belt rank.
Instructor Development
Beginning preparation for eventual instructor certification, including understanding of teaching methods, student psychology, and class management.
