Common Questions About Hups TaeKwon-Do

  • What is TaeKwon-Do and how is it different from other martial arts?

TaeKwon-Do is a Korean martial art known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. It focuses on developing physical fitness, mental discipline, and character development through the five tenets: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. Unlike some martial arts that focus primarily on grappling or hand techniques, TaeKwon-Do emphasizes powerful leg techniques and distance fighting.

  • What age can children start TaeKwon-Do classes?

At Hups TaeKwon-Do, we welcome students of all ages! Children as young as 7 years old can begin their TaeKwon-Do journey. Our junior programs are specifically designed to accommodate different age groups and skill levels, ensuring that each student receives age-appropriate instruction that promotes physical development, discipline, and confidence.

  • What is the belt system and how does testing work?

Our belt system follows the traditional TaeKwon-Do ranking from White Belt (10th Gup) through Black Belt (1st Dan and beyond). The progression includes: White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, and Black belts, with high and low variations for colored belts. Belt testing occurs periodically throughout the year, and students must demonstrate proficiency in patterns, techniques, sparring, and knowledge appropriate to their level. Each belt has specific requirements including minimum training periods and class attendance.

  • How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?

The journey to Black Belt typically takes 3-5 years of consistent training, though this varies based on individual dedication, natural ability, and training frequency. Students must progress through 9 color belt levels (Gups) before testing for 1st Dan Black Belt. Each level has minimum training time requirements, with higher belts requiring longer periods between tests. Black Belt candidates must also complete community service hours, attend seminars, and participate in tournaments.

  • What should I wear to my first class?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for free movement - such as a t-shirt and sweatpants or athletic shorts. Training is done barefoot, so no special footwear is needed. Once you decide to continue training, you'll need to purchase a dobok (TaeKwon-Do uniform). We can help you order the appropriate uniform through our school.

  • Do I need to be in good physical shape to start?

No prior fitness level is required to begin TaeKwon-Do! Our classes are designed to gradually build your strength, flexibility, and endurance. We welcome students of all fitness levels and work with each individual to help them progress at their own pace. TaeKwon-Do is an excellent way to improve your physical fitness while learning valuable self-defense skills and building confidence.

  • What are the benefits of TaeKwon-Do training?

TaeKwon-Do offers numerous physical and mental benefits including: improved cardiovascular fitness, increased strength and flexibility, better coordination and balance, self-defense skills, stress relief, improved focus and concentration, greater self-confidence, discipline and self-control, and respect for others. For children, it also helps with academic performance, social skills, and anti-bullying strategies.

  • Are there competition opportunities?

Yes! We encourage students to participate in tournaments as they advance. The Taekwon-Do Association (TTA) hosts several tournaments throughout the year where students can compete in patterns, sparring, and breaking. Competition is not mandatory but provides valuable experience and helps build confidence. Advanced color belts and Black Belt candidates are required to participate in at least one tournament as part of their testing requirements.

  • What is the cost of classes?

Class fees are set by the City of Westminster Recreation Centers. For current pricing and registration information, please visit the Westminster website through our "Register Now" button or contact the recreation centers directly. Additional costs may include uniform purchase, belt testing fees, and optional tournament participation fees. We strive to keep our programs affordable and accessible to all students.

  • Can parents watch classes?

Yes, parents and family members are welcome to observe classes! We have seating areas where you can watch your child's progress. We believe parental support is important for student success. We also encourage family members to consider training together - TaeKwon-Do is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy and provides a unique bonding experience.

  • What is the TTA membership requirement?

The Taekwon-Do Association (TTA) is our governing organization. While beginning students are not required to join immediately, TTA membership becomes necessary as students advance to higher color belts and is mandatory for Black Belt testing. Membership provides access to seminars, tournaments, and ensures standardized curriculum and testing procedures across all TTA schools.
