Testing Requirements

1st Dan - Black Belt

Comprehensive Technique Mastery

1st Dan Black Belt students must demonstrate mastery of all techniques learned from white belt through red belt, with advanced proficiency, power, and control.

Advanced Kicks

  • All previous kicks with black belt level proficiency
  • Advanced flying and jumping kick combinations
  • Multiple directional kicking sequences
  • Advanced spinning and turning kicks
  • Combination kicks with hand techniques

Advanced Hand Techniques

  • All previous hand techniques with black belt level proficiency
  • Advanced striking combinations
  • Simultaneous hand and foot techniques
  • Multiple opponent scenarios
  • Advanced blocking and counter-attacking

Advanced Stances

  • Perfect execution of all fundamental stances
  • Advanced stance transitions
  • Combat applications of stances
  • Power generation through proper stance work

Step Sparring

  • Advanced 1-step sparring with multiple variations
  • Multiple attacker scenarios
  • Advanced self-defense applications
  • Teaching ability for step sparring

Free Sparring

  • Advanced free sparring techniques
  • Competition-level sparring
  • Multiple rounds with different opponents
  • Demonstration of control, technique, and strategy

Tournament Competition

Must have competition experience and demonstrate tournament-level patterns and sparring techniques.

Community Service

Must have completed the required 10 hours of community service since beginning training.

Seminars

Must have attended all four required seminars:

  • Kicking seminar
  • Technique/Patterns seminar
  • Referee/Sparring seminar
  • Self Defense/Ho Sin Sul seminar

Ho Sin Sul (Self Defense)

  • Advanced self-defense techniques
  • Multiple attacker scenarios
  • Weapon defense (basic)
  • Ground defense techniques
  • All techniques from previous ranks with advanced proficiency

Breaking

Adults – Hands

Requirement Details
Power breaking 3-5 boards with advanced hand techniques
Speed breaking Multiple boards with rapid succession techniques
Technique demonstration Variety of hand techniques showing precision and control

Adults – Feet

Requirement Details
Power breaking 4-6 boards with advanced kicking techniques
Height breaking High kicks breaking elevated targets
Flying/Jumping techniques Advanced aerial techniques

Juniors

Age-appropriate breaking requirements scaled to student's size and ability, focusing on technique over raw power.

Teaching Requirements

  • Ability to teach basic techniques to lower ranks
  • Understanding of class structure and safety
  • Demonstration of leadership qualities
  • Knowledge of TaeKwon-Do philosophy and ethics

Physical Fitness

  • Cardiovascular endurance for extended testing
  • Flexibility for advanced techniques
  • Strength for power techniques and breaking
  • Agility and coordination for complex movements

Mental Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of TaeKwon-Do theory
  • Understanding of rank responsibilities
  • Demonstration of the five tenets in action
  • Commitment to continued learning and improvement
